I was a 16 year old high school student working afterschool at Epic Records in NYC when I met Jim Jeffries. hat I remember is a big, swqeet guy who loved his music, and did his job passion. I particularly remember times he wore his Detroit Red Wing jersey to work, and his hockey stick in the corner of his office. He was always nice to me,and I'm sorry to hear he has passed on.

I certainly remember your dad, George Hunter. I did noon-3 plus was the regular sub for Robin in the morning and most other vacation slots. George was often the news person during my shows as well as Bill Bonds. Bill actually tipped me to the opening at WKMH. I had hired Bill in Albion, Michigan while I was PD at WALM for his first broadcast job. Both George and Bill were on shifts which put them on news when I was on. Your dad was probably the number one on camera commercial talent in Detroit at that time. He was always a sharp dresser and looked ready to step in front of the camera at all times. Robin and I were the only WKMH jocks who were kept on for Keener 13 but all the news people for WKMH started on WKNR. Growing up in Detroit and Royal Oak I had watched George Hunter on TV for years and it was a huge thrill for me to be on the same station with him. Bob Green, who was a much better top 40 production whiz, replaced me after I gave a couple of months notice that effective January 1964 I was moving into management in Milwaukee. I went to the overnight shift late in 1963 while a new (and short lived) PD from WLS in Chicago (I think the name was Sam Hale)moved to noon to 3. I had not wanted to be a top 40 jock (thought I was above that in those naive days) but enjoyed proving I could do it to the point that I got an offer to go back noon-3 on pretty much my terms late in December, 1963. My deal in Milwaukee involved a changed in ownership and I needed to be on site January 1 so I passed on the opportunity to be a part of the real on air legend of WKNR.

As a youngster in the late 50's I had a neighbor Frank Simms who worked at WKMH. He DJ'd, simulcast baseball games and was first to broadcast Piston games at which I sometimes helped keep stats and run errands. Would appreciate any info on him and his career after leaving the station. I believe he moved west. Remember visiting Robin Seymour upstairs in his studio on Michigan Ave, those were the days.....bop bobbin with Robin..
Sincerely,
Dick Ward

George! Great to hear from you! The Keener online idea is something we've been rolling around for several years. So far the music licensing has been the big obstacle. We still dream about it. Email me your Keener life story sometime!

Back in the mid 60's Sangoo had his famous garbage can. Later this was mentioned in a Beach Boy's live 'Barbara Ann' song about Sangoo's famous ash tray. I seem to remember that when Sangoo left one of his radio stations there was a problem because the radio stations claimed that 'Sangoo' and the garbage can were copyrights and Sangoo could not use them in the future. Does anyone remember that hassle?

My father George Hunter was a newscaster on WKNR and WNIC in the late 1960's and 1970's. He also was an announcer on WXYZ television during the same time period. I was wondering if you have any "hopefully" fond memories or stories about my dad.
My younger brother Drew and I when we were children were actually on the air at WKNR. We did a public service spot for kids about summer safety while school was out.
I loved to play baseball as a kid and have some fond memories of playing catch several times with Bill Bonds in my backyard.
Your name for some reason rings a bell with me.
Eagerly awaiting you reply.
                                             Sincerly,
                                                       Craig Hunter
